Most people arrive at this decision from one of two directions: either the stairs are unsafe and something needs to go up, or the existing rail is ugly and it's time it went. Either way there are five decisions to make, and they're easier taken in order.

Decision 1: Handrail or guardrail?
These get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing.
A handrail is what you hold. It runs alongside the stairs, usually mounted to a wall, and its job is support.
A guardrail is what stops you falling off an edge. It has infill — vertical balusters, horizontal bars, or cables — and it's required wherever there's an open drop, typically anything more than 30 inches.
If your staircase has a wall on both sides, you need a handrail. If one side is open to a drop, you need a guardrail, often with a handrail on top of it. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a project fails inspection.

Decision 2: Where does it mount?
This is usually decided for you by the stairs rather than by preference.
Wall-mounted is the most common and the least intrusive. Brackets fix to the wall, the rail sits about 1.5 inches clear of it. You need a continuous wall alongside the run and something solid to anchor into.
Ground-mounted or free-standing bolts into the stair itself. This is what you need for front entry steps with no adjacent wall, and for any open-sided run.
Check for obstructions before you commit — a light switch or window trim partway up the run will change your bracket spacing and sometimes your rail length.
Decision 3: Which material?
The honest summary:
- Powder-coated steel — strongest, most affordable, fine indoors and in ordinary outdoor weather. The finish is a coating, so deep scratches need touching up.
- Aluminum — cannot rust, noticeably lighter, slightly less rigid. Good for exposed outdoor stairs.
- 304 stainless — corrosion resistant through the material rather than a coating. Brushed finish suits modern interiors.
- 316 stainless — marine grade. Only necessary near salt air, but genuinely necessary there.
- Wrought iron — for period and traditional properties where a plain modern profile would look wrong.

Decision 4: Which profile?
Profile is the shape of the tube you actually hold. It affects grip as much as looks.
Square and rectangular profiles read as modern and architectural. Round and oval are more traditional and often more comfortable over a long run. Slim profiles project less from the wall, which matters in a narrow stairwell but gives you less to hold.
One practical constraint: for a rail to be properly graspable, the section needs to be something a hand can close around. Very wide or very deep profiles look impressive and grip poorly.

Decision 5: What length, and how high?
This is where most orders go wrong.
The rail runs the diagonal of your staircase, not the height of the wall or the depth of the floor. You measure nose to nose — the front edge of the top step to the front edge of the bottom step — then add 6 to 12 inches at each end so the rail extends past the first and last step.
Mounting height is 34 to 38 inches from the nosing of each tread, measured vertically. Most people find 36 inches comfortable.

Before you order
Three things worth checking:
- Your wall length. The rail needs to be at least a couple of inches shorter than the available wall so it doesn't overrun the edge.
- What you're anchoring into. Studs, masonry and stucco all need different hardware. Tell us which and we'll send the right anchors.
- Whether it needs to meet ADA. Residential work usually doesn't, but if it does, the ADA requirements are stricter about extensions and grip dimensions.
